Targets and numbers

Medium and long-term objectives of Vienna IT Enterprises are to:

  • collaborate in an active network
  • strengthen the innovative and competitive capabilities of our partners
  • strengthen international competitiveness
  • increase the name recognition of our members
  • positive allocation of the IT location Vienna 
  • Prime objective of VITE is to strengthen the awareness of the importance of cooperations, to connect the existing competencies of our members and to thereby initiate new and innovative projects

VITE offers a wide range of services and acts as a platform to realise ideas, initiatives and projects directly from the economy. Main activities are in the fields of internationalisation, marketing, cooperation, distribution support and education.

VITE's members are companies, research and development institutes as well as educational establishments in the field of ICT and relevant service companies.

Figures

Approximately 26.000 companies have a trade licence for information- and communication technology (ICT) in Austria. More than 8.200 of those are located in the Vienna region (5.300 directly in Vienna).

Due to that,  Austria's capital is by far the biggest IT location in Central and Eastern Europe. The companies located here earn more than 78% of the Austrian total turnover (last year: 28.4 billion €, national: 19.3 billion €, abroad: 9.2 billion €). Vienna´s export quote amounts to 6.26 billion €. About half of that goes into CEE-countries.

Numerous multinational companies are already represented in Vienna, and coordinate their business activities in Central and Eastern Europe from there. Technology, innovative capabilities and the involved markets are quality characteristics of this location.

Relevance of the ICT sector for the economy

The numbers above visualise that the importance of the Viennese ICT sector for the economy is bigger than in equivalent the ICT economy for Austria as a whole. In 2008 about 8% of all Viennese companies were allocated to the ICT sector (Vienna Region: 7%; Austria: 5%).

Approximately every tenth employee in Vienna works for an ICT company.

Likewise, the ICT sector generates about 10% of the in Vienna earned revenues and is responsible for about 15% of the regional gross value creation in the market-oriented economy.

As to the revenues and profits, the volume of trades generated in the ICT sector in 2005 exceeded the one generated in the tourist sector (2.48 billion €) approximately by the factor 8.

Compared to tourism (gross value creation around 1.1 billion €) the contribution of the gross value creation in the ICT sector was approximately 6.3 times higher.
